How to split a PDF
- Drop a PDF on the box above or click Choose a PDF. The tool shows its page count and size.
- Choose what you want to do with the tabs: Extract pages, Split by ranges, Every N pages or Every page. A note under the tabs explains each one.
- For extracting and splitting by ranges, type the pages in the box, for example
1-3, 5, 8-. For Every N pages, enter how many pages each part should have. - Click the button. The results appear as a list with the page count and size of each file. Download them one by one, or Download all as ZIP.
The splitting happens in your browser. Your document is never uploaded, and there is no sign-up, watermark or limit on how many times you use it. The original file is never changed: you always get new files.
The four ways to split
- Extract pages collects the pages you list into one new PDF, in the order you write them.
5, 1-2gives page 5 first, then pages 1 and 2. A page can appear twice. Use it to pull a few pages out of a long document. - Split by ranges makes one PDF for each comma-separated range.
1-3, 4-6, 9produces three files. Use it to cut a combined scan into the documents it contains. - Every N pages cuts the document into equal parts. A 10-page file with N = 4 gives parts of 4, 4 and 2 pages.
- Every page saves each page as its own PDF, named
report-page-1.pdf,report-page-2.pdfand so on.
Pages are copied exactly as they are. Nothing is converted to an image or compressed again, so text remains selectable and the quality is unchanged. Bookmarks and interactive form fields belong to the document as a whole and are not carried into the new files.
Worked example
You scanned three documents into one 12-page PDF: a 5-page contract, a 3-page invoice and a 4-page report. Choose Split by ranges and type 1-5, 6-8, 9-12. The tool creates three files named scan-pages-1-5.pdf, scan-pages-6-8.pdf and scan-pages-9-12.pdf, with 5, 3 and 4 pages. The sizes add up to roughly the size of the original, and you can download them together as one ZIP. If you only needed the invoice, choose Extract pages with 6-8 instead.
Tips and common problems
- Count pages by the PDF, not by the printed number. A book may start numbering at its third page. Pages here are counted from the first physical page.
- Password-protected files must be unlocked first. Open them in a PDF viewer and save an unprotected copy.
- Out of range. If a page number is higher than the page count, the tool tells you which entry is wrong and how many pages the file has.
- Remove pages instead? To delete pages, list the ones you want to keep with Extract pages. Everything else is dropped.
- Reduce the size. If a part is still too large to email, run it through a PDF compressor afterwards.
Frequently asked questions
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
No. The file is read and split inside your browser, so contracts, ID scans and statements never leave your device.
How do I extract only some pages?
Choose Extract pages and type the pages, for example 1-3, 5, 8-. The tool saves them as one new PDF in the order you wrote them; 8- means page 8 to the end. The original file is not changed.
How do I split a PDF into several files?
Choose Split by ranges and list the parts, for example 1-3, 4-6, 7-: each range becomes its own PDF. Or use Every N pages, or Every page to get one file per page. With several files you can download them all as a ZIP.
Will splitting reduce the quality?
No. Pages are copied as they are, without re-compression. Text stays selectable and images keep their quality. Document-level extras such as bookmarks and form fields may not be carried over.
Why can't I open my PDF?
A password-protected PDF cannot be read without its password. Open it in a PDF viewer, enter the password and save an unprotected copy first. A damaged or renamed non-PDF file will also be reported.
